Disabled American Veterans History and Background
Founded in 1920, the DAV has a mission to assist servicemen's and servicewomen's transitions to civilian roles by offering charity services and community assistance.
The DAV collects gently used items from donation pickups to donate to veterans and their families, then sells these items in their thrift stores to raise money and fund other services. The cash they raise in their stores allows them to fund free rides for medical appointments, job training for civilian employment, VA reform legislation, and more.
Conditions of Items
The DAV will accept gently worn clothing and accessories for men, women, children, and babies. Items must be clean and in good condition, free from holes, tears, and stains.
The DAV will accept donations for small household items, including kitchenware, glassware, pots, pans, dishes, utensils, and cookware. All items must be whole without chips, scratches, stains, residue, or other blemishes.
The DAV can accept small kitchen appliances like microwaves, mixers, toasters, and miniature refrigerators. Contributions cannot include large appliances like full-size refrigerators, freezers, stoves, or dishwashers.
The DAV will accept donations of shoes for men, women, and children. Contributions must be in good condition for resale in DAV thrift stores to help support the DAV charity mission. Shoes should be clean, free from stains, and show little wear and tear.
Accepted sporting equipment includes golf clubs and bags, cleats, fishing poles, small workout equipment (dumbbells, resistance bands, exercise balls, etc.), baseballs, bats, footballs, soccer balls, tennis rackets, and similar items. The DAV will take any donations in good working condition that are suitable for resale in their nonprofit thrift locations.
The DAV will accept items such as small household and garden tools. Accepted tool donations include garden tools, drills, bits, and other hand tools.
Donor pick-up or drop-off can include almost anything for small electronics, including baby monitors, entertainment systems, portable radios, and other electronics in good working order. Note that the DAV cannot accept computers, TV or computer monitors, or other large electronics.
Donations to support children of veterans are readily accepted at drop-off locations, donation bins, or free donation pickup. DAV will accept tax-deductible donations of toys, bikes, novelties, costumes, baby clothing, and other unused children's items creating clutter in donor garages and storage units.
Digital media items like DVDs and Blu-rays should be in good working order without scratches and in the original case. Donations of movies, TV shows, video games, and other media entertainment items may be accepted with donation pickup or drop-off at applicable DAV locations or donation bins.
Women in Orange County and the greater Los Angeles area can schedule a free donation pickup to donate jewelry and new cosmetics to support other women in the community. Women veterans who served need help integrating into the community and training for civilian jobs.
Donations of other household items can include almost anything, such as knickknacks, artwork, picture frames, lamps, sheets, comforters, curtains, and pet beds. DAV cannot accept furniture donations, including mattresses, box springs, couches, tables, desks, and other household furniture.
