Habitat for Humanity History & Background
Clarence Jordan, with help from Millard and Linda Fuller, founded Habitat for Humanity in 1976 to help impoverished families access affordable housing. The global nonprofit organization has since grown to around 70 countries worldwide and earns the support of thousands of communities. Habitat for Humanity primarily aims to empower families through strength, self-confidence, and stability.
Notable figures have been active in the organization. For example, President Jimmy Carter volunteered with the organization to renovate over 4,300 homes in 14 countries. The nonprofit organization continues to be a leader in charitable services.
Habitat for Humanity values Christian teachings of altruism and understanding. Its mission is to promote human dignity and the development of sustainable communities. Despite its Christian background, the organization does not proselytize or require volunteers to be of a particular faith.
Conditions of Items
Habitat for Humanity accepts clothing donations under certain conditions.
Every item must be clean and without holes or tears. The organization accepts gently used clothes of all sizes. Before making a clothing donation, a donor should remove any stains or markings that may carry bacteria or other harmful elements.
Clothing donation pick-up policies differ among local Habitat for Humanity ReStores. Some locations may pick up dozens of clothing donations at once, while others only accept small bundles.
Most Habitat ReStore locations take furniture donations. Accepted furniture items might include office chairs, coffee tables, home décor, bed frames, metal desks, and more. However, the organization does not accept box springs or mattresses.
Volunteers might ask about the condition of your upholstered furniture donations before you can arrange a pick-up. Each furniture item must be clean and have all its parts.
It’s best to remove any pet hair and stains from the surface of your furniture before donating it to a Habitat ReStore.
Still, not all Habitat ReStores have the resources to offer furniture pick-up services. Before donating furniture, check the policies of your nearest affiliate.
Habitat for Humanity highly encourages the donation of building materials that help volunteers construct affordable homes. While the website does not offer a complete list of accepted items, some contributions may include:
- Cabinetry
- Flooring
- Fence pieces
- Bricks
- Lumber
- And more
A Habitat for Humanity donation center will inspect these items and stock them for resale. Additionally, Habitat for Humanity will use many of these unwanted items for programs that repurpose them for affordable housing. They will not accept warped, broken, or rusted building materials.
You can arrange a free donation pick-up of household items and appliances through your local Habitat ReStore. Items may include functional ceiling fans, track lighting, and hot water heaters.
Check these appliances thoroughly before sending them to a local Habitat ReStore. These donated items should be in working order before pick-up.
Some small appliances may include hazardous materials, like refrigerant or mercury. Habitat ReStores will likely not accept any items that contain chemicals. Check Habitat for Humanity blogs or contact the nearest free pickup center for more information.
Many Habitat for Humanity ReStores accept cars for recycling, reuse, and reselling. If you plan on donating your vehicle, check the seats for pet damage, wear, or stains. The organization will accept the following:
- Cars
- Trucks
- Snow and water vehicles
- Motorcycles
- Farming vehicles
Habitat for Humanity has the right to deny certain items that would compromise the safety of volunteers and recipients. Remember that ReStore locations sell these items, so they must be in working order to retain value.
Before scheduling an item for free pick-up, determine if it is safe for use. Some Habitat for Humanity ReStores will not accept items such as:
- Broken or aging exercise equipment
- Perishable items
- New or used makeup
- Objects with exposed wiring
- Stained glass windows
- Toddler beds
- Entertainment centers
A Habitat for Humanity ReStore may not accept cumbersome items due to storage limitations. It can be labor exhaustive to transport or maintain these large donations.
Lastly, Habitat for Humanity ensures that each furniture donation complies with local and federal laws. The Consumer Product Safety Commission details standards for items like car seats, high chairs, and strollers. If these donations cause harm to recipients, the organization could be liable for damages.

Organizations like Easy Donation Pickup accept many of the same items if you cannot find a ReStore pickup or drop-off location nearby. These volunteers will remove large furniture and other items directly from your home or apartment.
Why Donate to Habitat for Humanity?
Habitat for Humanity proves its commitment to restoring impoverished communities with decades of organizational experience. Its ethical and inclusive approach allows the nonprofit to improve the living quality of families belonging to countless cultures.
When you donate to Habitat for Humanity, you help others start a new life. Like many charities, this legitimate organization is transparent with its funding and partnerships. While Habitat for Humanity allocates most donations toward the national organization, you can choose the specific program you'd like to support with your donation.
The organization monitors government policies and advocates for legislation that makes housing more accessible. It introduced a 2020 Strategic Plan to increase its outreach and plan the construction of more homes than ever before.
Furthermore, Habitat for Humanity accepts alternative forms of donations, like cryptocurrency and stock.
Are My Donations Tax-Deductible?
Some donations may be tax-deductible if you itemize them before the end of the tax year. A car donation is also eligible for these deductions under specific qualifications.
Note that the resale price of your vehicle will determine how much your donation is worth. Habitat for Humanity's website states that you can receive a tax deduction for the total selling price of your car if it is worth more than $500. You can also deduct your vehicle up to $500 if it sells for less.
Habitat for Humanity will give you a tax deduction receipt before the end of the tax year. Check the IRS website for more information about these tax-deductible donations.
