Whether you donate items in-person or schedule a donation pickup, St. Vincent de Paul volunteers will give you a tax receipt for your donation.
How To Schedule A Pickup
To schedule a free pickup, visit St. Vincent de Paul's website. Some locations offer pickups on Saturdays, but there is no guarantee. You can also contact your local St. Vincent de Paul drop-off center by phone to schedule a donation pickup.
Society of Saint Vincent de Paul History & Background
In 1833, a young law student in Paris, France, named Frederic Ozanam participated in a debate, challenging him to demonstrate what he and other Catholic students were doing to help their poor neighbors. Ozanam saw that the poor men and women in his community needed help, so he and six others established the "Conference of Charity."
The seven members of this charitable group used their own money and donations from friends for funding. At the time, they helped the impoverished men and women in their community by providing various services.
Eventually, Ozanam placed the Conference of Charity under St. Vincent de Paul's patronage.
After that, Ozanam saw it expand to 15 other cities in France as over 2,000 people joined the mission. 12 years later, it made its way to the United States.
Over a century later, you can find the Society of St. Vincent de Paul pursuing its mission around the U.S., helping men, women, and children in need.
Conditions of Items
When you donate items, remember that they are going to the St. Vincent de Paul thrift stores to support various programs. The organization must be able to sell these donated items to fund its mission and events, so it does not accept damaged, broken, or unusable items.
Before scheduling a donation pickup service, ensure that your donations are in relatively good or like-new condition.
Clothing donations should be clean, washed, and wearable. If your clothing donations have significant tears or dangerous household chemicals, it's best to throw them away.
St. Vincent de Paul can accept the following clothing donations as long as they are in a box:

Leave Donations Outside on the Ground Floor or in the Driveway
If you schedule a free donation pick up, your items should be boxed, bagged, and left outside your home. If your house has stairs leading up to the front door, leave your items at the bottom of the stairs or in the driveway.
Leaving your items packed and outside makes it easier for volunteers and organization staff to collect more donation items on their routes.
In addition, donation pick-up drivers will not come into your home or climb stairs. They also do not disassemble items. The only exception to this is if you schedule a priority pick-up service.
