St Vincent De Paul Donation Pick-up

Quick Info

Society of Saint Vincent de Paul History & Background

In 1833, a young law student in Paris, France, named Frederic Ozanam participated in a debate, challenging him to demonstrate what he and other Catholic students were doing to help their poor neighbors. Ozanam saw that the poor men and women in his community needed help, so he and six others established the "Conference of Charity."

The seven members of this charitable group used their own money and donations from friends for funding. At the time, they helped the impoverished men and women in their community by providing various services.

Eventually, Ozanam placed the Conference of Charity under St. Vincent de Paul's patronage.

After that, Ozanam saw it expand to 15 other cities in France as over 2,000 people joined the mission. 12 years later, it made its way to the United States.

Over a century later, you can find the Society of St. Vincent de Paul pursuing its mission around the U.S., helping men, women, and children in need.

Conditions of Items

When you donate items, remember that they are going to the St. Vincent de Paul thrift stores to support various programs. The organization must be able to sell these donated items to fund its mission and events, so it does not accept damaged, broken, or unusable items.

Before scheduling a donation pickup service, ensure that your donations are in relatively good or like-new condition.

A Note on Free Donation Pickup Services and Acceptable Donated Items

Donating unwanted items is a great way to declutter your house while making a difference. Many charitable organizations offer donation centers and pickup services so that both the donor and the recipient can simplify their ends of the process.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a reputable charity that feeds, houses, and clothes families and individuals in need. The organization sells donated items at its thrift stores to generate funding for its programs and mission: helping people struggling to satisfy their basic needs. St. Vincent de Paul makes it easy to donate by having multiple donation drop-off centers, stores, and a donation pickup service. Here's what you need to know about donating to help the charity raise funds.

St. Vincent de Paul helps your neighbors who cannot otherwise afford housing, clothing, furniture, medical care, or other necessities. It also provides food, emergency financial assistance, and disaster relief assistance for those in the local community.

Who Benefits From Your Donation?

When you donate household items and clothing to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, they go to the organization's thrift stores. It uses these thrift stores to generate funding for its programs, which help feed the hungry, house the homeless, and provide medical care and other forms of support.

Through your donations, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul can:

  • Provide 4,000 meals every day through five charity dining rooms
  • Provide medical care to 12,700 patients in a year
  • Prevent 2,400 families from eviction thanks to homelessness prevention programs

Common Guidelines When Giving Donations

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul happily offers free donation pick-up services. However, donors should follow certain guidelines to ensure that they help volunteers and the people they support.

Schedule at Least Three Days in Advance

When scheduling a free standard donation pick-up (available Monday to Friday), request a pick-up at least three days in advance. Drivers have multiple stops on their daily routes. Scheduling your pickup in advance gives them time to plan their stops and ensure they pick up as many donations as possible on their routes.

Box and Bag Your Donations

If donating small items like clothing or household goods, put them in boxes or bags to make it easier for volunteers to collect and to keep them protected from the weather. If you are donating clothing, wash and fold them before putting them in a box.

In addition, separate donation items and label the boxes to help volunteers know what you are donating. This also helps them separate donation items for the thrift stores after they drop them off.

Leave Donations Outside on the Ground Floor or in the Driveway

If you schedule a free donation pick up, your items should be boxed, bagged, and left outside your home. If your house has stairs leading up to the front door, leave your items at the bottom of the stairs or in the driveway.

Leaving your items packed and outside makes it easier for volunteers and organization staff to collect more donation items on their routes.

In addition, donation pick-up drivers will not come into your home or climb stairs. They also do not disassemble items. The only exception to this is if you schedule a priority pick-up service.

Why Donate to the Society of Saint Vincent De Paul?

Your donations help the Society of St. Vincent de Paul support its mission and also help your neighbors and their families. However, contributing to a good cause is not the only reason to donate.

It Helps the Environment

Recycling by donating furniture and clothes instead of throwing them out helps save the planet by reducing how much goes into the landfill. Whether replacing your old furniture with something new or just not using certain appliances, you can give them new life by recycling and turning them into donations.

It Declutters Your Home

We all have furniture or household items that do little more than take up space in our homes. Donating unwanted or unused items helps clear space in your house and make room for new things that you'll actually use.

With numerous free donation pick-up services, you can declutter your home without leaving!

It Helps Your Community Neighbors

St. Vincent de Paul team members raise funds for its various events, medical clinics, homeless prevention programs, food centers, and more by selling donated clothing and furniture items at its thrift stores. Donating and recycling your items not only gives them a new life but also helps less fortunate families receive vital services.
