Savers Donation Pick-up

Quick Info

Savers History and Background

Like most modern corporate success stories, Savers had modest beginnings, starting as a single thrift store location, providing savvy shoppers with stylish outfits at affordable prices.

With the trademarked tagline “declutter responsibly,” Savers is the ultimate champion of reuse. Instead of throwing things away and buying new, the community can drop off unwanted, gently used items at a Savers donation center, giving new life to clothing and household items while saving people money in the process.

Donations made to Savers are sold in one of their thrift store locations for a profit, but Savers will pay nonprofits money from each donation. The arrangement is that each Savers thrift store has a nonprofit partner who benefits from your donations.

You might also have seen Savers referred to as Value Village. This thrift store name is used in parts of the United States and Canada under the corporate name TVI, Inc., and the company is a registered professional fundraiser.

Donations to Savers help the environment, champion reuse, save the community money, and fund programs that make the world a better place.

A Note on Free Donation Pickup Services and Acceptable Donated Items

Don’t throw it away; donate it!

As the saying goes, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” and if you’ve got unwanted clothing, clutter, and stuff lying around the house, why not donate it?

Often, your donations are tax-deductible and fund programs that benefit your local community in the following ways:

  • Providing affordable housing
  • Supporting Vietnam veterans
  • Giving education and training to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities
  • Offering relief to natural disaster victims
  • Helping pets find their “furever” homes

If you’re short on time and would prefer to avoid the hassle of finding a local donation center and hauling your stuff, contact Easy Donation Pickup to schedule a free pickup.

As a for-profit thrift retailer, Savers’ biggest beneficiary is the environment, as the company champions reuse rather than buying everything new.

What Savers Does with Donations

Your generous donations go directly into circulation at one of 315 Savers thrift stores across the United States, Canada, and Australia, but it’s important to note that the funds collected at retail do not directly support a nonprofit. While Savers promotes giving new life to reusable items, the Savers thrift stores ultimately collect the profit from your donations.

However, that doesn’t mean nonprofits and other charities don’t benefit. Savers has partnered with several charities, and when you donate your unwanted items, Savers purchases them from a non profit organization, giving them money on your behalf.

In a way, this model puts Savers in the category of being a professional fundraiser, in that they raise money for various local nonprofit partners across the nation.

Savers’ charity nonprofit partners include:

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters
  • Boys and Girls Club
  • Candlelighters
  • Clothes Helping Kids
  • DAV
  • Easterseals
  • Epilepsy Foundation
  • Lupus Foundation of America
  • National Kidney Foundation
  • National Multiple Sclerosis Society
  • United Cerebral Palsy

Most charities that Savers supports are designated as local branches, but some also have a nationwide presence.

Benefits of Donating to Savers

When you donate items to Savers, you could benefit in more ways than you might think! Common motivations to donate clothing, reusable items, and household goods include:

  1. Help the environment. Savers champions reuse, keeping more items out of landfills and preventing unnecessary consumption of new things that exploit precious natural resources.
  2. Shop the store. After you drop off your donations, head on into the store to find clothing, household items, or small furniture to pull a room together. You’ll be amazed at what you can find at a Savers store.
  3. Get tax benefits. Your donations not only help the community, but they can also help your pocketbook. You can contact your local Savers nonprofit partner to request a receipt to claim a tax deduction.
  4. Help low-income families. Your donations of clothing and other reusable items can make it affordable for low-income families to purchase what you donated, giving these items a second life while warming your heart.

A Full List of Items that Savers Accepts

Savers accepts clothing and household items, which can encompass a wide variety of items. To clarify, the following donated items are welcome at Savers:

Keep in mind that, as a for-profit company, Savers may be pickier than most charities, and they can turn away some or all of your items at their discretion. If you plan on donating furniture, make sure that your furniture donation is in good condition, as Savers doesn’t accept furniture donations that are broken.

Furthermore, Savers doesn’t do donation pick ups, so if you want your donated items to be taken off your hands without the hassle, you can arrange a pick up with another company. Options include working directly with the nonprofit organization to schedule a pick up or contacting Easy Donation Pickup.

Stuff Savers Won’t Accept

Some of your unwanted items are also not wanted by Savers. This doesn’t mean you can’t donate them or schedule donation pickups with another organization. Each donation center or thrift store has its own standards, and Savers politely declines the following items:

  • Large appliances
  • Auto parts
  • Construction and building materials
  • Mattresses
  • Money
  • Weapons
  • Infant products
  • Food
  • Damaged furniture (large furniture is okay)
  • Hazardous materials
  • Televisions and computer monitors

These limitations exist for a variety of reasons, including both consumer and employee safety. For example, products made for infants could have been recalled due to dangerous or life-threatening safety issues. The employees working at a donation center are not trained to be on the lookout for recalls or to determine whether the product is up to the current safety standards of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

To sum up, Savers does not accept items that could pose a risk to the community, nor will they pick up your donations.

Savers also restricts items that are oversized and difficult to sell, such as broken furniture and televisions. Mattresses are another no-no due to the risk of spreading bed bugs. Other thrift stores, such as The Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity, will accept mattresses if they are in good condition.
