AMVETS History & Background
The AMVETS story started in 1944 when veteran volunteers were looking for ways to help WWII veterans obtain the benefits the federal government promised them. As the number of returning soldiers increased, it became clear that nationally organized assistance was necessary to aid veterans.
In 1944, nine representatives from veterans’ clubs formed The American Veterans of World War II (AMVETS). In 1947, President Truman made AMVETS the first Congressionally chartered World War II organization.
AMVETS membership is available to any individual who served or is currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, including the National Guard and Reserves.
Conditions of Items
Your AMVETS donation can consist of various general items in gently used condition.
The AMVETS donation services pick up clothing items for men, women, and children in all styles and sizes. Your clothing donation for pick-up can include pants, shirts, dresses, sweaters, and other clothing. You may also donate baby clothing.
It's best to donate clothing that is clean and wearable, with minimal signs of wear and no visible stains. Accessories in the clothing category include shoes, gloves, life jackets, and more. The program accepts donations of mattresses up to queen size, provided they have no stains or rips. The furniture pieces you donate should be large enough for one person to carry.
Donations to AMVETS can include small appliances such as immersion blenders, air fryers, toaster ovens, and water kettles. The appliances for donation pick-up should be clean and in working condition.
Each unit should have a size and weight that one person can carry. If you need to schedule an AMVETS donation pick-up including large or heavy items, please contact the thrift store in your area to make an arrangement.
The AMVETS donation pick-up service accepts various household items. You can donate area rugs, lamps, small clocks, wooden television trays, magazine racks, and fans. A Note on Free Donation Pickup Services and Acceptable Donated Items
Everyone runs into tough times at some point in their life. That doesn’t mean these people should be abandoned, especially when they need help the most. That’s why we find ways to help, and one of the most common ways to do this is by donating to helpful non-profit organizations.
AMVETS is an organization that provides affordable goods and services to American veterans. They also make the process of donating significantly easier for the donors by providing a free donation pickup service. This entails people coming to your place of residence and picking up your donations from your doorstep to be dropped off exactly where they need to go.
In this article, we discuss all of the necessary information pertaining to the AMVETS pick up service so that any person looking to donate can feel completely confident in their decision.
AMVETS is a 501(c)3 veterans charity and the most inclusive veterans service organization in the United States. The various programs AMVETS provides are open to every individual who honorably serves or served in the active military, air, or naval service.
AMVETS Drop-Off Locations
AMVETS offers multiple ways to donate equipment, kitchen utensils, or other products. If you have small items you want to donate to aid veterans' families, you don’t need to schedule a pickup. Instead, use the Locator page on the AMVETS website to find your nearest drop-off location.
Dropping off items lets you choose a donating time and place that is convenient for you. However, don’t use these drop-off points to get rid of broken or useless items.
Please note that some areas don’t have AMVETS drop-off locations.
Who Benefits From Your Donations?
When you donate to AMVETS, you contribute to programs that benefit United States veterans in various ways. These programs include the National Service Officer Program, which helps veterans obtain compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Your donation also supports the Scholarships program, which benefits eligible veterans and their dependents by helping them get an education. When you schedule a pickup, you also support the Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service, which benefits veterans seeking healthcare.
AMVETS Donation Process
The AMVETS donation process is relatively straightforward. If you want to donate an item, contact your local thrift store via the AMVETS website and schedule a pickup.
You don’t need to be home when the driver comes to pick up the donation. However, the item you donate should be easy to access. When you schedule a pickup, identify the place where you will leave the package.
The driver will leave your receipt near your front door or garage door. If you don’t see the receipt, you can request one in two ways:
- Get in touch with the relevant pickup location and ask for a receipt
- Request a receipt via the AMVETS website
Is AMVETS Accessible In My Area?
One of the benefits of donating to AMVETS is that the organization has locations in multiple areas across the United States. Visit the AMVETS thrift store page to find out which store is nearest to your location. Scroll through the listings to pick one that is suitable.
Each store listing features a phone number with a link to a webpage where you can see the different ways of donating. You can also contact these stores directly to schedule a pick-up service.
Common Guidelines When Giving a Donation
When you schedule a pick-up service, complete the online form thoroughly. Add your name, complete address, and zip code. You should also provide your phone number and email so that the store has multiple ways of contacting you if necessary.
Give the location where the driver can pick up the package if you are not home. Some forms provide location options, such as at the front door or near the garage door. Mark the package so that the driver knows which package to pick up.
Can You Get a Tax Deduction When Donating to AMVETS?
You can get a tax deduction when you donate to AMVETS. Your donation is tax-deductible at its present fair market value. This value is the price at which the item would change hands between a buyer and a seller who are informed and willing to make the transaction.
What Items Should Not Be Donated?
When you schedule a pickup with AMVETS, ensure that you only pick items that meet the service’s requirements. The AMVETS website lists all the items it doesn’t accept. Make sure that you don’t donate an item from this list.
Clothing
Most clothing is accepted. AMVETS doesn’t list underwear among the clothing donations it won’t accept, so it's best to get in touch with a thrift store near you to find out if you can donate underwear.
Furniture and Appliances
The AMVETS donation pickup services don’t accept baby products like baby bottles, car seats, strollers, and infant carriers. The pick-up services also don’t accept baby furniture such as changing tables, cribs, bassinets, and playpens. The AMVETS Pickup program doesn’t accept these items due to frequent recalls.
Other items you can’t schedule for pick-up services include air conditioners, bathroom fixtures, built-in furniture, dishwashers, electric stoves, or gas stoves. You also can’t donate school desks, pool tables, refrigerators, or microwave ovens.
Sport Equipment
You can’t schedule a pickup for exercise equipment. However, some AMVETS locations might accept this equipment for pick-up if one person can carry it without needing aid. Other items in this category that AMVETS doesn’t accept as donations include golf bags, walkers, and roller skates.
Personal Items
The AMVETS Pickup program doesn’t accept defective toys or some large plastic toys. You cannot schedule a pickup for incomplete or broken jewelry items.
AMVETS also doesn’t accept hospital bedding, encyclopedias, or magazines as donations.
